What happened to the 12-month plan
For years the annual Xbox subscription was the obvious buy: twelve months of Xbox Live Gold in one code, usually discounted, often the cheapest way in. That is the memory most people are searching against, and it is why the question keeps getting asked.

Stacking codes: how a year actually gets bought

Mixing tiers is where value leaks. If you hold Ultimate time and redeem an Essential code, or the reverse, Microsoft converts the remaining time by its own formula rather than simply adding it, and the conversion is rarely in your favour. Run one tier to its end before switching.
Recurring billing and codes do not mix cleanly. A stacked code sits on top of an active recurring subscription and the card keeps billing when the code time runs out. Is committing to a year the right call?
