How to cancel Xbox Game Pass
Cancelling turns off the next payment — it does not cut off access today. You keep the subscription until the period you have already paid for runs out. Here is where the switch lives on each device, and what you keep afterwards.
The fastest route: the web
This works from any device and is the one to use if a console is not in front of you.
- Go to account.microsoft.com/services and sign in with the Microsoft account that pays for the subscription. On a shared or family console that is often not the account you play on, and it is the single most common reason people cannot find the option.
- Find Xbox Game Pass in the services list and choose Manage.
- Choose Cancel subscription, or Turn off recurring billing — the wording depends on how the subscription was set up. Confirm when prompted.
- The page then shows the date your access ends. Until that date, nothing changes.
If Game Pass is not listed at all, you are signed in as the wrong account, or the subscription came from a prepaid code — a redeemed code has no recurring billing to cancel and simply expires on its own.
On an Xbox console
Press the Xbox button, then Profile & system → Settings → Account → Subscriptions. Pick Xbox Game Pass and choose to turn off recurring billing. The console hands the final confirmation to the same Microsoft account page, so expect to finish in a browser view.
On PC
In the Xbox app, select your profile picture, then your account settings — it opens the same Microsoft account services page as the web route. There is no PC-only cancellation flow; every route lands in the same place, which is why the web method is the one worth remembering.
What you keep, and what stops working
The clean way to think about it: you rented the games, you own everything you did in them.
Games from the catalogue stop launching when the subscription lapses. Not sooner — the moment of cancellation changes nothing, only the end of the paid period does. Saves stay in the cloud, and if a title is still in the catalogue when you come back, you resume where you stopped. Achievements and Gamerscore are permanent and were never conditional on the subscription. Anything you bought stays bought, including titles you bought at the member discount while subscribed.
Online multiplayer is the one to check before you cancel, because it depends on your tier rather than on Game Pass as a whole. Refunds, and the mistake worth avoiding
Cancelling and refunding are separate things. Cancelling stops future charges and never returns money for the current period on its own. If you want a recent charge back, request it from the subscription page — Microsoft may prorate a refund where the service has barely been used, and may decline. Redeemed prepaid codes are generally not refundable at all.
The mistake that costs real money is the cancel-and-resubscribe loop: stopping, coming back three weeks later at full price, stopping again. Because there is no annual discount — a month of Ultimate is ₩16,000 in South Korea however long you stay — there is no penalty for leaving, but there is no loyalty saving to recover either. Cancelling in a month you will not play is simply free. Cancelling in a month you will play just means paying again.
One genuinely useful thing to do before the period ends: look at what you were actually playing. A game you have put real hours into is usually cheaper to buy outright than to keep a subscription running for, and every game page here carries that price.
