Xbox Game Pass Core Is Now Essential — What Changed, and What Did Not

If you came here looking for Xbox Game Pass Core, the short answer is that it still exists and it is called Xbox Game Pass Essential. Microsoft renamed it on 1 October 2025. The price did not move, the tier did not lose anything, and if you were subscribed to Core you are subscribed to Essential now without having done anything.

That is the whole answer to the question most people are actually asking. The rest of this is what the tier includes, and whether it is the right one.

What was renamed, and when

Two tiers changed name in the same announcement on 1 October 2025:

• Game Pass Core → Xbox Game Pass Essential, price held at about $9.99/month
• Game Pass Standard → Xbox Game Pass Premium, price held at about $14.99/month

Neither rename came with a price rise or a cut to what is included. The increase in that announcement was aimed squarely at the top tier: Ultimate went from $19.99 to $29.99, a 50% jump effective immediately. Ultimate was later cut back to $22.99 on 21 April 2026 — the full price history is here.

Worth noting for anyone tracing the lineage: this is the second rename for this tier. Xbox Live Gold became Game Pass Core in 2023, and Core became Essential in 2025. Same membership, third name.

What Essential actually includes

It is the entry tier and it behaves like one. You get online multiplayer, a smaller curated library rather than the full catalogue, and the member discount on Microsoft Store purchases.

What it does not include is the part worth being clear about, because it is what separates it from everything above it: no day-one releases, and none of the bundled subscriptions — Fortnite Crew, EA Play and Ubisoft+ Classics are Ultimate features. What those perks are worth is a separate question, and for a Fortnite player it is a large one.

Is Essential the tier you want?

It is, in two situations, and neither of them is "it is the cheapest".

You mainly play online and buy your own games. If your time goes into a handful of live titles you already own, most of what the higher tiers sell you is a library you will not open. Essential covers online play and gets out of the way. This is the old Gold use case and it is still the strongest one.

It is a second console. A child's or spare console that needs online access but does not need the catalogue twice over.

Where it stops making sense is if you find yourself buying two or three games a year that would have been in the Premium or Ultimate catalogue. At that point the tier difference is smaller than the games, and you are paying more to save less.

One thing that did not survive the rename

Annual codes. Essential is the tier still most likely to turn up as a 12-month retail card, because it inherited the old Gold annual membership and retailers kept stocking it — but Premium and Ultimate are sold by the month only, and there is no annual discount on any tier.
